Mobile...Why should I care? by Malcolm Fraser

In July we saw the launch of the Apple iphone in Canada. Earlier in the year I was surprised to hear that in the US over 40% of Yahoo's mobile traffic is now coming from the iphone/ipod touch platform. This is significant, and points to a long prophesized event … "the large scale usage of mobile Internet".

Matt Waddell, a product manager for Google Mobile, said in an interview, "We are seeing that mobile Internet use is in fact accelerating."

Does your website content need to be mobile friendly?  There is no doubt that the iphone/ipod touch platform is a significant advancement in the ease of use of mobile internet. It is platforms like this and the BlackBerry that point to the need to start thinking about making content available in a format that is mobile friendly.

Consumers, clients and partners are all looking for very tactical information: "What time is the movie?", What is the address of that business?", "What did that latest press release say again?".

Tactical content is key

Have you ever looked at a regular website with a microbrowser? (the small web browsers on cell phones). Microbrowsers have a difficult time interpreting full scale web experiences, so making tactical content mobile friendly is key to user adoption.

Take a look at your current website. What content is most likely to be accessed from a mobile device? What impression do you want to make on the mobile web?

Take your iphone and go to isl.ca for a demo of what we have started to do with mobile delivery.

Comments, would love to hear them… ceo@isl.ca
